Every certified company needs an independent internal audit before certification and every year after.

Why work with a Lead Auditor who has run a QMS herself
Plenty of ISO 9001 consultants have built quality management systems for other people. Fewer have had to live with one. I built and ran the QMS for my own organisation, took it through its audits, and dealt with the findings afterwards. I know the difference between a system that looks good on paper and one a small team will still be using in a year.
I’m a BSI-qualified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, so I also know what the certification auditor will ask, what they’ll accept as evidence, and what gets written up. And I spent over 25 years in IT, running large teams for several organisations, so I’m used to operational reality: deadlines, budgets, and people who have a day job to do alongside the quality system.
That combination is why the systems I help build are proportionate. We put in what ISO 9001 actually requires and what will improve how you work, and leave out the rest.

Each session takes you through a chunk of the standard. Between sessions, you adapt our templates at your own pace. Most organisations are audit-ready in 8 to 12 weeks.
Workshop 1, weeks 1 to 2: Kick-off and scope
Set the foundations and agree what’s in and out.
- Define your QMS scope and the context of the organisation (clause 4)
- Identify interested parties and their requirements
- Draft your quality policy and quality objectives (clause 5 and 6.2)
- Capture roles, responsibilities and leadership commitment
- Agree the project plan and certification timeline
Workshop 2, weeks 3 to 4: Risks, opportunities and planning
Work out what could stop you delivering a consistent service, and what to do about it.
- Risk and opportunity register (clause 6.1)
- Planning of changes
- Resources, competence, awareness and documented information (clause 7)
- Map your core processes and how they interact
Workshop 3, weeks 5 to 8: Operation (clause 8)
The biggest session, because this is where most of the work sits in a 9001 system.
- Operational planning and control
- Customer requirements, enquiry to contract, and how changes are handled
- Design and development if it applies to you, or a justified exclusion if it does not
- Control of externally provided products and services (suppliers)
- Production and service delivery, identification and traceability, customer property
- Release of products and services, and control of nonconforming outputs
Workshop 4, weeks 9 to 10: Performance and improvement
Show that the QMS works and that you can prove it.
- Monitoring and measurement, including customer satisfaction (clause 9.1)
- Internal audit programme and sample records (9.2)
- How to run a useful management review (9.3)
- Nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement (clause 10)
Workshop 5, weeks 11 to 12: Internal audit and readiness check
An independent internal audit, performed to the requirements, with a report you can show the certification body.
- Verify every mandatory record is in place
- Confirm evidence of implementation exists
- Resolve nonconformities before the external audit
- Practise answering typical auditor questions
The full programme is £2,950 + VAT, with 20% off for our first ten coaching clients. Certification body fees are not included; they vary with the size of your organisation and the accreditation you choose, and there must be a separation between the consultant and the auditor.

Frequently asked questions
We’re a very small company. Can we even get ISO 9001 certified?
Yes. There is no minimum size; sole traders and one-person companies certify regularly. The standard scales to your organisation, and so does our approach.
Do you audit on-site?
Everything we do is delivered remotely as standard, which keeps the fixed fee low and works well for the vast majority of SMEs, wherever you are in the UK or beyond. If your processes genuinely require on-site observation, ask us on the discovery call. Fiona is based in Berkshire, so visits across the south of England are straightforward, and we can quote for anywhere else.
We already have a consultant-built system nobody uses. Can you help?
This is a common situation that we see. Usually the answer is to strip it back rather than add to it. The coaching programme handles both rescues and new builds.
How quickly can you audit us?
Typically, we can start within days, with the report delivered two to three weeks later. If you have a certification or surveillance audit booked, tell us the date, and we’ll work back from it.
What’s the difference between your internal audit and the certification audit?
The certification (or surveillance) audit is done by your UKAS-accredited certification body and results in your certificate. The internal audit is a requirement of the standard itself, and it’s your dress rehearsal: same rigour, but findings you can fix quietly before they become nonconformities on the record.
Do you offer a cheaper, lighter audit?
No. A partial audit gives you a partial answer, and “partially ready for certification” isn’t useful to anyone. One audit, one fixed fee, one clear verdict.
